It documents internal staff conversations and culture regarding Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, revealing a deep-seated hostility that has gone unchallenged for far too long. One of the most striking aspects of this report is the personal testimonies of Jewish staff members who have experienced antisemitism firsthand. Michael Goldfarb, who spent 15 years at MSF/Doctors without Borders US, recounted how European colleagues would openly express their belief that Israel does not have a right to exist. This extreme ideological fervour, where Israel is equated with a Nazi state and Jews with oppressive colonialists, has created a toxic environment where antisemitism thrives. The report also highlights the experiences of Dr. Estrella Lasry, a tropical medicine advisor and consultant at MSF's Geneva headquarters, who witnessed the appalling lack of empathy towards victims in Israel. She described how the organization's communication was biased and how she was accused of being part of an 'Israeli propaganda machine' in a meeting, with no one batting an eyelid. The internal staff forum, known as 'the Souk', is another breeding ground for antisemitism. Posts on this closed online channel since October 7, 2023, have included statements like 'The fight for freedom... is about liberating the world from the grip of Zionism...' and 'Israel is a 76-year-old crime scene'. These statements, made by MSF staff, reveal a clear and present danger of antisemitism within the organization. What is particularly disturbing is the way in which MSF has dismissed evidence of systemic antisemitism and requests to take action against the hatred. The report suggests that this toxic organizational culture can only be addressed through fundamental changes in MSF's structure, leadership, and staffing at both the international level and among the many country branches and sections. Additionally, it calls for independent oversight frameworks to ensure that MSF's leaders, including board members and funder-enablers, are held accountable.
